The San Jose Job Corps (pronounced Job Core) is a federally-funded part of the nationwide
Job Corps system authorized by the Workforce Investment Act. The
U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration,
oversees all Job Corps operations.
Using the *Career Development Services System (CDSS), Job Corps Educates and trains young men and women who are 16 through 24-years-old at the time they enroll in the program. Job Corps serves low-income U.S. Citizens or legal residents who can benefit from the available training. Individuals with certified disabilities may be older than 24 and still be eligible to enroll in Job Corps.
*The Career Development Service System, CDSS, specifies the four phases of the Job Corps program
from Admissions through Placement. These four phases are Outreach and Admissions (OA), Career Preparation Period
(CPP) getting acclimated and started, Career Development Period (CDP) vocations and academics, Career Transition
Period (CTP) Job Search and Placement.
There are 330 students living in the San Jose Job Corps Center
dormitories located in East San Jose. There are 110 Job Corps students in
a non-residential program, mostly those with family obligations,
who live at-home and commute to the center for training.
Zero Tolerance
Zero tolerance for violence or drugs is a key part of the Job
Corps program and strictly enforced. In fact, all new enrollees
must take a drug test when they arrive at a Job Corps center to
begin their training. Those not passing their initial test are enrolled
in substance abuse diversion programs and must be able to pass a
drug test in 45 days or they are mandated by the Department of Labor to be released from Job Corps.
