Describe the San Jose Job Corps Center?

San Jose is a city of over 800,000, the eleventh largest is the nation and third largest is California. It is part of Silicon Valley. The Center is located on a ten-acre campus in the eastern foothills of the city in a residential neighborhood. The campus was once an elementary school. In 1994 new dormitories and other facilities were completed. The Center has classrooms, offices, a cafeteria, a recreation center, dormitories, health and wellness center, career center, and a large outdoor area.

If I am admitted, what do I do if I arrive in San Jose from Out-of-Town?

If you are arriving from Out-of-Town by bus, train, or airplane, call 1-800-966-4240 toll free to let our security office know that you are at a transit station and need transportation to the Center. Say that you are a New Arrival. Then wait in the Baggage Claim area. Transportation will be sent from the Job Corps center for you.

If I am admitted, what do I do on my Arrival Date if I am a local resident?

If you live locally and have been assigned to the San Jose Job Corps center as a residential trainee, you report to the Job Corps center between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on your Arrival Date. When you get to the Job Corps center say that you are a New Arrival and ask to be taken to the Orientation Room.

If I am admitted as a Non-Resident Trainee, what do I do on my Arrival Date?

You will report to the San Jose Job Corps Center at 8:00 a.m. on your scheduled Arrival Date. Say that you are a New Arrival and ask for the Orientation Room.

What should I leave at home?

If you will be living at the Job Corps center, you cannot bring hot plates, cooking utensils, portable heaters or similar items.

We discourage bringing large television sets, stereos, boom boxes, etc. due to the size of dormitory rooms and the nature of living in a room for four trainees.

How about bringing a car, bike, skateboard, etc?

Sorry, but you cannot if you are a residential trainee who will live in our dormitories. Only approved non-residential trainees may bring cars to center, and they must provide proof of insurance, drivers license and car registration.

These are not rules made up by the San Jose Job Corps Center. These are mandatory Job Corps policies and will be enforced.

Should I bring money?

It is not necessary but you may wish to bring some spending money or pocket change. You will be receiving $10 cash on Friday at the end of your first week in Job Corps. But remember, trainees get cafeteria meals and new trainees will have a busy planned schedule of activities for the first few weeks.

What should I bring with me to Job Corps?

Bring:

Medical records for your TB (tuberculosis), polio and tetanus shots. Otherwise on your second day in Job Corps you will be given new shots.
Your Social Security Card.
Medi-Cal card or a medical coverage card if you are covered by health insurance such as Blue Cross, Kaiser, military health insurance, etc.
Sickle Cell Test results if you have taken this test.
Birth Certificate.
Birth Certificate for a dependent child if you will be sending an allotment to that child.
Marriage License if you will be sending a spouse an allotment.
Drivers License if you have one already.
High School Diploma or GED Certificate if you have either already.
List of Emergency Contacts, names, addresses, telephone numbers of persons to contact in an emergency.
Personal Items that will help you feel more at home in your dormitory such as stuffed animals, photographs, etc.

What kind of Clothes should I bring if I am going to live at Job Corps?

Bring the following:

3 pair of pants (jeans, slacks, cords)
3 shirts or blouses
1 set of nightware (pajamas and robe)
7 sets of underware
2 pair of shoes, sneakers, boots
1 pair of slippers
7 pairs of socks
1 medium weight jacket for everyday use
2 sweaters

This is not a mandatory list. These are suggestions.

Please put your name on any luggage.

If you have clothes hangers, bring some.

Your possessions will be inventoried when you arrive by Job Corps staff so that you will have a record of what is yours.

Job Corps will supply bedding.

Do I have to take a Physical Exam?

Yes. This is mandatory and includes a mandatory drug test. You will meet with the program’s Wellness (medical) staff on your second day here and will get a compete physical during your first two weeks in Job Corps.

This may include shots, laboratory tests including blood tests, seeing Job Corps Wellness (medical) staff, and pelvic exams for females trainees. You must take these tests or you cannot stay in Job Corps. There are no exceptions.

What are some of the Job Corps Center’s rules?

Job Corps has rules that all trainees are expected to obey. They are to make your stay in Job Corps safe and to enable you and other trainees to complete the program and become employable.

Here are some of the rules.

Zero Tolerance for Fighting, Intimidation, Gang Activity, or Drugs on Center. Zero Tolerance is strictly enforced and violators will be dropped for the program.
No weapons allowed.
No sexual activity on Center.
There is a curfew.
There is a pass system for leaving the Center.
Residential trainees may not have a vehicle, bicycle, skateboard, etc. on Center.
Trainees must have their Job Corps identification with them and must show it to staff whenever requested.
There is a Center Dress Code you must follow.
You must follow the other rules and regulations in your Trainee handbook.

Is smoking allowed?

Smoking is allowed only in designated smoking areas outside of the Campus buildings. For health and safety reasons no smoking is allowed in any Center buildings. In addition, for those interested, Job Corps periodically offers sessions to help you quit this habit.

How long may I stay in the Job Corps program?

The maximum normal stay is two years. When you enroll at the San Jose Job Corps Center we ask that you make a commitment to stay enrolled for at least six months. This is to insure that you gain employability skills that will serve you for a lifetime. At the San Jose Job Corps Center the average trainee spends about 11 months in the program.

Your length of stay is determined by your progress in the program and the type and length of the training you take, and of course, by your adherence to the program’s rules. Remember, two years is the maximum normal stay. Your progress, demeanor and employability determine just how long you may remain enrolled.

How long will I be in class or training each day?

Classes are typically held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, although there may be some exceptions.

Do I have to take academic classes?

You will take academic classes if you do not yet have GED or high school diploma, or if your academic levels in certain areas need brushing up in order for you to succeed in your chosen vocation. You will be given a test soon after you enter Job Corps to determine your academic skill levels. Remember, these tests are not to keep you out of Job Corps but just to see where you need to be assisted in order to succeed.

What tests do I have to take?

During your second week in Job Corps you will be given the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). This determines if you need academic classes. It is not used to keep you out of Job Corps, but is a guide you and for staff to develop your individual training plan. In a few months you will take follow up tests to measure your progress.

If I am 16 can I take the GED test?

No. you must be 17 to take the GED test to earn your high school equivalency diploma certificate. This is not a Job Corps rule, but is according to the standards set by the General Education Development (GED) certificate program.

Can I get high school diploma in Job Corps?

At the San Jose Job Corps Center a high school diploma may be earned by eligible trainees through a Charter High School that is located on the Job Corps campus. The high school program targets Job Corps students who are 16 and 17 years old, although some older trainees may be admitted on a selected basis.

Will I be able to start vocational training immediately?

Maybe yes and maybe no. It all depends on how you test on your academic skills and on the starting dates of vocational courses and on the availably of opening in those courses. Many Job Corps courses are taught off-campus at the Central County Occupational Center and some popular vocational courses may have a waiting list. Be patient. In Job Corps you will be always be learning some new skill that will enable you to succeed in the work force.

Are there any breaks or vacations?

Yes. There is a summer break of two weeks in July or August and a winter break of two weeks in December.

What can trainees do in their free time?

There are many activities available. They include activities as part of the Job Corps recreation program. These range from sports to arts and crafts and special interest clubs to movie trips and other day trips. Trainees can also relax in their rooms or in common areas, use the games room and exercise facilities, study, read, or watch television. Trainees who qualify for off-center passes often go on their own or with friends to off-campus activities in the San Jose area.
