Catholic Social Teaching
All persons work. There are
many kinds of work. In each job,
workers deserve to have safe conditions, reasonable hours
and fair wages.

Solidarity
The world's people are interdependent. That means
we need each other if we are
to live. We must work together
if we are to go on living.

Hello "5ers"

Welcome to Week one of "5 Minutes Per Week" called The Texas Legislative Process.

Ask your parents to help you with this week's activities. It will make a great Lenten Sabbath (Sunday) activity!

Let's always start with a prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,
Bless us with our first week of 5 Minutes Per Week. Open our hearts to what it is that you want us to understand. We ask that you be with us through our week, our busy schedules, and our daily life. Grant us the strength that is needed to enjoy and appreciate the lesson for this week. Thank you for the many blessings in our life. May our hearts overflow with compassion and love to do your will!
In your name we pray,
Amen

Okay, time to have fun!!

1. Go to the website: As you take the tour, think about how fun it will be to visit the capitol. There is a legislative session going on right now. The legislature meets every 2 years. That means they last met in Jan-May of 2007! The session is 140 days long and started in January & will end June 1, 2009.

Be sure to stand on the front sidewalk of the capitol and turn 360 degrees. Get your parent's help to click onto rooms in the capitol and find out which direction the senate is (hint: it's east or west). Look for the house of representatives.

SOLIDARITY

All people around the world are God's children. That makes us brothers and sisters. We are connected to each other.

2. To find out who represents you & your family, please complete the following
Go to the following website: www.capitol.state.tx.us

Go to the box on the lower right "Who represents me? and type in your address, city, & zip code. You will find some the following information.

  • 2 Texas United States Senators who represent you in Washington DC
  • 1 Texas U.S. Representative who represents you in Washington, DC
  • 1 Texas State Senator (there are 31 in the state)
  • 1 Texas State Representative (there are 150 in the state)
  • 1 Texas State Board of Education member

Print out a copy of this information & post it on your refrigerator door. This is very important! You will use this information later on.

3. Email me the names of your representatives for Texas (senate & house).

I think it would be neat to see how many of you "5ers" have the same State Rep or Senator. We can refer to this information when we have that letter writing party!
